Elle Runs: Ragnar Relay SoCal Recap

Ragnar Relay on Anything For The Crown

The Ragnar Relay SoCal seriously crept up on me. I have no idea where time went or why I didn’t bother looking at training schedules, but before I knew it race weekend had arrived. Even now I can’t believe it happened 10 days ago. But on that Friday afternoon, me and 11 others started a 200 mile (ish) journey From Huntington Beach to San Diego.

In case you aren’t familiar, this is how Ragnar Relay works. You create a team of 12 (awesome) people to run 200 miles from start to finish. Everyone has three different legs so each person’s total mileage ranges from 11 - 23 miles. The team is split into two separate vans for exchange purposes and comfort. (We rented a 14-person van so basically everyone had a row to his/her self.) Van 1 carries the first six runners and Van 2 carries runners 7 through 12. So once Van 1 has completed running their first leg they will tag Van 2 for the remaining runners to complete their first leg, and the process repeats until both vans have completed all three legs.

I have to say I don’t recommend not training for a Ragnar and that you should definitely try two-a-day runs for a slight idea of what to expect. As the third runner I had running times at 130pm, 12am and 8am. I’ve worked out twice in a day before but never at such odd times, and certainly not in the pitch dark where I needed to rely on a headlamp to see my feet.

Overall the race was an incredible experience. It’s crazy to see what you’re mentally and physically capable of when low on sleep, lacking hygiene and delirious from exhaustion. But it’s also a fun time to get to know people, grow closer and just have good fun. During and even after the race I really didn’t think I’d do another Ragnar, to be honest. But now that I’ve had some time to recover, I actually think I would do one again :)

Elle Runs: Force of Nature

NRC - Nike Run Club Speed Session on Anything For The Crown I've been pretty MIA lately but I promise it was all for good reason. March 14th I ran the Zion Half Marathon and on March 21st I hosted an InstaMeet on behalf of SMCLA for #WWIM11. Then a week after I was a part of an exclusive Nike photo shoot for some upcoming events. You may have heard me talk about NTC (Nike Training Club) but you'll start to hear me talk a lot more about NRC (Nike Run Club). They've recently revamped it for LA and it's pretty incredible. Take the Nike Free Stride Speed Session for example.

Just a week ago I got to be a part of this speed session and it completely blew my mind. It took place at 730am on a Thursday at the AT&T Center in downtown Los Angeles. Upon checking in I was personally escorted by staff and a cameraman up the elevator and to the welcome room where I was handed a pair of the newly released Nike Frees and a Nike Run Club t-shirt to change into. It was dark with blacklight lighting so only the new Frees and our NRC t-shirts lit up. Shortly after we made our way up a few flights of stairs where the walls were covered with fun messaging. And at the top we finally met our morning working. On top of the friggin helipad.

We were greeted by more staff and more cameramen, who quickly snapped photos of us taking photos and sending snapchats to our hearts' content. Treadmills were set up so they encircled the words FORCE OF NATURE and each treadmill was ready to be used with water and towel. So we didn't get to putter around for too long because soon after Coach Blue had us working up a sweat on the treadmills. If you want to see what kind of speed session we did, check out his track workout details on his Instagram.

Basically an awesome day with a killer workout to start the day and a sweet backdrop for photos. I think it's safe to say that this was a first and last experience for me so I'm glad I got to go. If you want to join in on the fun be sure to keep an eye on Nike LA for all of their upcoming NTC and NRC workouts. Like I said, I've been a busy bee and have lots more exciting news on the way so follow me as I run the SoCal Ragnar (which I'm probably doing as you're reading this), hike Mt. Baldy with Tender Greens, and more :)

Elle Runs: Countdown to Zion Half Marathon

Run Train Live Nike Women
And the countdown begins! Less than 24 hours until the Zion Half Marathon. I have to admit that I’ve been a bad runner and didn't train at the level I expected. Work has been busy and I just finished moving out of Venice-- a very big project for me that deserves its own post. But apparently the Zion Half Marathon is known for its hills and elevation climb, so it’ll be v e r y interesting to see how I do…especially because I plan on lots of hiking after #feeltheburn

Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women I’ve been running since the summer of 2010 when I started training for my first race ever, the Nike Women’s Marathon. I’m glad I got into marathons when I did because I was younger, had way less responsibility, and it helped shape my mentality and lifestyle for the better. The only downfall of getting into running at that time was being so new to the space that I didn’t know anyone with the same passion. People entering their last year of undergrad didn't think waking up at 5AM on a Saturday to run 12 miles was fun. Hmph.

Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike Women Run Train Live Nike WomenTraining was often a lonely sport but I eventually got used to. It became therapeutic and a time to just reflect on life or to not even think at all. I could just let my thoughts wander, wherever. So a few years later when I started to hear about Nike Training Club and Nike Run Club I was so intrigued. Where had these people been hiding all of my life?! I had gotten so used to being a solo runner that I shied away from running as a social sport. But things can change when you meet the right people.

Just a month ago I did a small photo shoot with some amazing people I met from Nike Track Club: Mellie, Jamaica and Christine. I also met Mark that morning, our incredible photographer for the day. We ended up exploring the Venice area from 630AM until past noon! It was such a fun day filled with running, training, and most importantly, living. I’m such an advocate of Nike for many reasons, but this specific day made me realize I loved them for a new reason. That they can unite total strangers over the love of simply being active.

A few days ago I also attended Nike LA's International Women's Day at the USC track. Ellie Goulding, Carmelita Jenner and Sarah Reinertsen made guest appearances before we embarked on 2-hours of HIIT and Run fun. The event also marked the revamping of #NRC, or Nike Run Club, so expect to see me mingling with fellow runners a lot more. I hope you all get a chance to experience this amazing community :)
